XP Laptop freezes and removes internet connection

I have a Presario 2500 laptop with Windows XP Pro on it, updated with most recent patches from windows update. It is also freshly formated (sadly several times because of this problem).
After a few minutes of doing anything that requires information from the internet to be sent through my router to the laptop, my Internet Connection under Network Connections goes away, and I then can no longer ping or visit a website. No "cable disconnected" thing pops up, simply my laptop hangs for a few seconds, every few seconds, then no more internet.
I can not ping computers or the router on my network either.

Do you have any USB peripherals plugged in?

Yes, I have one USB mouse plugged in, Logitech Wheel Mouse.

i tryed unplugging it, and let it run, still seems to hang pretty frequently.

I had a similar problem, but it something to do with the user's steering wheel and pedals he had connected to the laptop. I guess a mouse shouldn't cause that problem.

I was reading another posting the other day about some sort of trojan/worm type thing causing this problem, even after they guy had formatted the hard drive a few times, it still kept happening.

He had to install everything (windows, antivirus) and a firewall before he connected to the Internet.

Its just a thought, otherwise, sorry no-one else has had any ideas.

first of all, check your power options in the control panel to make sure all is set "on" when the laptop is plugged in.
Also check the network device in the device manager to make sure it's not set to allow to save power...

Is your laptop wired to the network or wireless? If you have another network card around, try it. If it's wireless, check and see if there are any phones around that share the frequency.

I had the exact same problem, but with a desktop.
when you click on send error report to microsoft it says the error was caused by a device driver, but that can't tell which one. From what I can tell, this is caused by either one of their security updates, or some undetected virus/worm.

Even after doing a full reinstall it still rebooted every time I tried to access a web site on the internet or intranet. The fix that worked for me was above.. reload the computer, formatting any and all drives in the computer, don't connect it to the network, and install all drivers, enable XP's firewall, install antivirus software, then connect to the internet and update service pack 1a, and any other security updates you need.
Once I did this the rebooting went away. Seems to be running fine now.

KISS , keep it simple stupid, miss that.
its got a built in network card, and its wired.
I am not sure what you meant by make sure everything is on?
I have it on, minimal power usage, and everything is set to never, like standby.
my network adapter card is set to not try and save power.

also i have the xp cd with slip streamed sp1 on it so =/
maybe i should try the format, then firewall and antivirus? though i did housecall's scan, and nothing showed up.
also all it does is every few minutes, is freeze the mouse and keyboard up, lose internet, laptop itself keeps on trucking
