I recently moved, and now have an new dialup number.
After being in my new place for a month, I got our phone bill and noticed a bunch of 1-2 minute calls to a number in my old city.
Turns out my computer is dialing my old internet access number.

When I moved, I just changed the number in the connection dialog. After seeing the phone bill, I deleted the connection and created a new one with the new info.

Got the bill this month, and am still seeing the connections.

I know this is not the connection that my computer is dialing when I connect normally, as the bill only has 1 or 2 minute calls.

Any suggestions on where else XP stores the numbers for dialup networking?

Any help would be appreciated!

This is only a bit of a guess but perhaps some trojan or spyware is dialling that number as a result of something you installed before your move.

Spybot

Ad-aware

Will check your computer for spyware and adware.

Some anti trojan software as well as virus protection and a firewall might help you.

Like the prior reply, just a guess, but do you use outlook? if so, there may some configuration there that may be looking to synch with email hosts at the old number. Just reaching.

Thanks for the replies!
I use outlook, but have it set up to use the LAN connection.
I had DSL before, but set up the dial up just before moving.

I installed Ad-aware, and it found 53 cookies and 1 registry entry. The registry entry said it was an Alexa object, and had a hex string, nothing that looked like the number the computer is dialing.

I let it fix everything, so we'll see if my problem goes away...

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Is there anything that will log the dial-up networking access?
TIA,
MJ

There might be a modem log in the Windows directory but that will only really tell you bites sent and received.

A Firewall log might give you internet address details.

You can search Google to see if there is anything to log numbers dialled. (I don't know of anything offhand).

You can trace applications dialling out via several programs, but they are only going to tell you what application is using the internet and where it is connected to.

Freeware. Active Ports might help you

Or if you want to spend $30, Port Explorer from
It is a slightly better product.

You can use the Netstat command from a command prompt and get some information.
Using netstat -ano. You can then look up the PID in Task Manager and know what app it is.

Some further information can be read here.
