XP Home or Professional 2

Hi,

Are big differences between the XP and Home versions i.e. in the types of software that they can run?

Professional has more features - like remote access; but as far as I can tell the inards are exactly the same to home.

I have Home at the moment and I would like to install MS SQL Server 2000 (Enterprise). This version is theoretically only meant for server OS like NT and 2000; I was wondering if there will be any major problems in installing it to my XP (Home).

I don't think SQL server will work on either Version of XP.

Hi!

You can install MSDE (basically - the full SQL engine, but without most of the tools) without problems on Windows XP (both Professional and Home versions of XP should work).

Have a look at

that should get you going..

Note: the MSDE version is e.g. included in office developper; with the professional (and up) editions of Visual Studio (.NET and most likely V6 as well).

SQL Server normally will not install on a non-server OS like XP Home or Pro. If you have a "developer" version of SQL Server it installs on NT 4.0 Workstation, NT 5.0 (2000) Pro, or NT 5.1 (XP) Pro.

I can't say it won't install on XP Home but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Remember: XP Home is XP Home - for home users - not developers or business users. And there is a LOT that is left out of Home or locked into "home mode." I looked hard at an XP Home installation last weekend and was appalled at how "Win9x-like" they were able to make it!

MSDE is sort of a stripped SQL Server 7, missing many tools and limited to about 10 users I believe - but quite functional. It will install on XP Pro (I've done it many times) and probably on Home.

Big diff I found was that XP Home doesn't include or support PWS or IIS. So if you are doing any kind of web developement you should consider XP Pro.

What's the cheapest way to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. My Sony VAIO came with XP Home, pre-installed.

You say you found it for $99? Where? I've only seen the Pro upgrade for $175-$199. I have seen Home for $99, but not Pro...

Actually, I just saw it on Amazon.com for $149.99 after a $50 rebate. Anyone find it cheaper somewhere else?

For PCs that ship with Home Edition, Microsoft is offering a Windows XP Professional Step-Up upgrade, which lets you upgrade from Home to Pro for only $125, a $75 savings. This is a rebate from MS and requires that XP was installed on the compter by an OEM.

It appears that is the best price. Not sure if the rebate coupon is part of the standard Upgrade or if you have to get the rebate coupon from the retailer.
