I have a XP home computer that I uninstalled Norton System works from, then I started having DHCP issues. I had to edit the registry to get the DHCP Client service to work again.
Now I get an error with ipconfig /renew

Windows IP COnfiguation

An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attemped on something that is not a socket.

The computer won't take a DHCP lease and I looked up the issue on the MS Knowledge base (Q316522), it says I need to reinstall McAfee Personal Firewall and use its uninstaller. I have never had McAfee installed so I am at a loss. I have not been able to find any registry edits that will help me out. I am stuck and would greatly appreciate some help

Can you use System Restore to go back before you uninstalled Norton? Then have another go at uninstalling Norton. Have you checked Norton's knowledge base at their support site?

Some reading here too.

See if there is any help to be had here.

How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP

This from google groups on that error

I have a fix for the issue below... Just need to do some more research...
Anyhow, if you open a dos window and type "ipv6 install" then reboot, and
open your network card properties and reinstall tcp/ip
