XP Home local disk appears as F: 3

I have just installed a new hard disk drive - it is the only HDD in the PC. This is attached to the primary IDE. On the secondary IDE are a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM.

When I boot XP Home and then go into Windows Explorer, the HDD appears as Local Disk (F. The CD and DVD appear as D: and E:.

Why would this happen and how do I get XP Home to recognise the local disk as C:?

This is common for machines with installed ZIP drives and similar:

To fix, physicly disconnect the ZIP drive or similar storage device and reinstall.

When you installed XP were there any external drives connected that may have used the C letter?

On the overall picture it doesn't really matter what drive letter is used by XP, it will work just as well whether it is C or F.

Tweakui has functionality to hide (and unhide) drive letters in XP.

I know this works in Pro edition. Right click on my computer and go to manage, select disk management and you can change your drive letters there and be able to see what is using c.

Careful: while this works for normal drives it is not alowed on the Boot volume.
