We are running XP Home on our work computers. Don't ask me why, I did not purchase these machines. Anyway, we are trying to setup a spare computer to work as an FTP. Is there a setting in XP to turn on FTP, or is that a separate piece of software we need to purchase?

Thank you for any help.

Are you trying to setup XP Home as an FTP server? If so, I don't think that you can with XP Home.

Try cerberus FTP Server. Its free, and rather good.

If, on the other hand, you can spend some money, go for IPSwitch WS FTP Server - its excellent.

Yes we are trying to setup XP Home as an FTP server. I will download those softwares and see which one works the best.

Originally they were talking about doing this through VPN. But, I think all they want to use that for is the same as FTP. If so, then hwy not set it up as FTP. It will be cheaper and easier.

Thanks for the information.

VPN? thats gonna get expensive - and complicated.

Stick with a decent FTP server, like WS_FTP, and don't use a generic account. Put a firewall on it, and only allow the ports you need, and the users you require. VPN's are not easy, and you need either dedicated hardware (appliance or server) or complicated software.
