I have .bak files taken off my XP Pro box and want to restore this files ( word documents ) on a XP Home box. However I cannot find the backup/restore facility . I have looked in add /remove Microsoft programmes and its not listed.

The XP home is on a new HP/Compaq box which has its own restore programme, and i was told it does not come with software anymore you just restore off the d drive

How can i get around this problem , as I do not have the XP Pro box anymore ?

cheers

Backup Utility for Windows XP Home Edition

To install Backup Utility, you need your Windows XP Home
Edition CD. Use Windows Explorer to open the Valueadd\Msft\Ntbackup folder, and then double-click
Ntbackup.msi. If your computer came with only a "system
recovery" CD instead of a full Windows CD, finding
Ntbackup.msi is not as easy. Look on the CD that was given
to you and on any additional hard disk partitions set up
on your computer. Some manufacturers provide the Windows
files more or less intact, whereas others embed them in
compressed disk image files. (Compaq systems with Windows
XP Home Edition pre-installed, for example, have Windows
files stored within Drive Image files on drive D.) If you
happen to have the disk imaging program that was used to
create the disk image files, you can extract the Windows
files you need.Backup/Restore

Note: ASR is not supported on home edition.
IF you install NtBackup from the CD to the Home Edition,
ASR functionality will appear to work fine during the
backup session. Since the setup does not support ASR in
the home edition, there is no way to initiate the ASR
restore in case of a disaster. If you need to restore from
this session, install Windows XP manually and then restore
from the ASR media.

From the Read Me Txt File : If you decide to backup to a
CDRW, you cannot target that device directly. You must
create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a
file. After the file is complete, copy the file to the
CDRW.

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home
Edition

An Error Message Is Displayed When You Attempt to Use the
Automated System Recovery Wizard

For an HP I think you need to do something similar to this:

NOTE: The Backup utility is provided as a value added software and is not a part of the Operating System. Microsoft has included the Backup utility only with the retail version of Windows XP. The OEM version of Windows XP preinstalled in the Presario does not include it. To
install the Backup utility, you need to install SoftPaq
SP20077. To obtain the SoftPaq SP20077, please contact
HP Technical Support at 1-800-OK-COMPAQ (1-800 652-6672).

To install the SoftPaq, follow these steps:

1. Insert the CD into the optical drive. If it autoruns, click Exit.
2. Click Start, select All Programs, choose Accessories, and click Windows Explorer.
3. Click My Computer, click WinXP32c_US, choose Valueadd, select MSFT, and then select NTBackup.
4. Double Click NTBackup.MSI

This will install the Backup utility.
