I have a Umax astra 3450 USB scanner, and when I plug it in to a USB port, XP auto recognizes it (cool) and then forces you to use XP's generic scanner wizard to actually get your scans, (not cool). Umax's software is a massive memory hog but at least it gives me the control to prepare my scans acuratly. How can I tell XP to let go and let me use my software? I can install the software fine, but when I try and run it, it tells me the .dll is in use. There was a fix for this in 2k which involved turning off driver ID's as a default and having everything powered on and attached before installing the driver. This does not work in XP.
Also, I noticed in the manual, that if I attach it to a Windows machine, I will not get use of the one touch scan/copy/email buttons on the scanner itself. Why, if anyone can tell me, does the very latest in software from the largest and richest developer in the world still, to this day, lack the ability to do all the things that a Mac has been able to do for years? When will it be fair for windows users to ask that things just start working? BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
