I have installed a Serial-ATA HDD on my Dell PC with no problems and re-connected the old HDD. Both are running XP Pro and I can see everything on the old drive now called E: I have run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard from the XP ROM choosing the "This is my old computer" radio button and it collected everything on the old drive. I had to then close out this wizard because I couldn't get two wizards to run simultaneously. I ran the Wizard and chose the "This is my new computer" - it says it transferred the files and settings after working for a few minutes. However I don't see any of those files on the new C: drive.
Any ideas on getting the wizard to 'work' for me or should I just transfer files with drag and drop and manually assign settings? I don't know if this old drive will run in an older PC - IBM GL300. I could try it. That PC may have a problem booting XP Pro?
All suggestions/links appreciated. Thank you - Rick in Minneapolis

Do you have a file called USMT2.unc on your old system? Move it to the new system or point the wizard to it that is being run on the new system.

Have a look at the options, I have used it to transfer files (and settings) from from one operating system to another on a dual boot on the same machine.

Are you dual booting? The files can be just transfered manually. Themes can be saved via Display Properties on your old system and inserted via browsing from the Themes setting on your new system.

You cannot use FAST in a situation of XP-to-XP.
You can only use FAST where the files and settings are from an earlier OS release being migrated to XP.

Why, I have no idea.

No would the User State Migration tool help, is this requires a Domain Server.

There are third-party tools for this, google it.

I'm pretty sure XP to XP is allowable, the only exclusion on the Wizard page is 64bit editions of XP?

Thank you all for your help. I have successfully used the F & S Transfer Wiz. It seems the answer to my problem was to boot from the old HDD and follow the Wizard steps, then to boot from the new HDD and follow the Wizard steps to install the transfered files and settings. It didn't work to only boot from one hard drive and choose the appropriate settings.
