Hi,is there a way to replace explorer with a third party application or repair it?

Can you expand a little on what you are asking?

What are the problems that you are having?

The Explorer.exe file it's self can be replaced. However often problems with Windows Explorer are due to some other issue.

Do you have lots of pretty Red X's in your Event Viewer?

Anything could be causing Explorer to crash. You might consider recent updates. Also consider any other changes you have made. Corrupted files can cause this too.

To get further information about your errors look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

Well to be honest,I've got to basic errors in the event viewer;one says disk and the other atapi.I have the feeling that my HD is about to fail me but I'm not sure though if the tricks the explorer is playing on me are due to these errors.

Sounds more like your CD/DVD is causing this, like a bad/scratched medium...

6465,

More information on your problem with Explorer, perhaps with some examples of what is occurring, would help. Also exact error messages from the Event Viewer would be helpful in troubleshooting your particular problem.
