We have a division that is running a Windows 2000 SBS File server with predominantely Win 98 clients. We have been trying to migrate them to XP clients but the office manager has been resistant. He claims that every time he adds a XP machine to the network the network grinds to halt. Being that this division is several states away and a low priority I have not been able to see this condition first hand. Is this possible that one machine running XP (basic install with common programs, i.e. MS Office) can slow down the entire network? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

No, this does not sound likely.

It is possible, however for the XP machine to run slowly if it is not configured properly. For example, if the XP client does not have a proper Internal Windows 200x DNS server to communicate with.

But I've never heard of adding an XP computer to the network and then have the whole network slow down.

Jpoandl,

Thanks for the response. I do not think this is likely either. But I thought I'd ask. The person handling the computers at this division is an accountant/office manager and is not very competant when it comes to computers. I have a feeling there is something he is not telling me.

Thanks again for your help.

I have Migrated well over 1000 Machines from Win2k to XP and there was no problem atall.
