I am trying to boot off the XP CD to get to recovery console to fix NTFS errors using chkdsk. Whene the XP CD loads on any menu choice, new install, R for repair I get a message XP does not see the hard drive. I can see it enabled in BIOS and my NTFS reader sees the drive and files. Any idea why The XP CD doesnt see the drive?

The PC is a Dell dimension with a SATA HD.

u have 2 supply sata driver by pressing f6 when setup asks for or u change in bios the hdd mode to native (sata will be accessed like a ide drive)

Thanks, are the SATA drivers specific to Dell or generic should work? Dell BIOS is very generic, I dont see an option to change it to native mode..

The drivers that you require are related to the Motherboard manufacturer, not the make of machine.

isn't this for doing a REPAIR INSTALL (In Place Upgrade) of the installed OS and not the Recovery Console (which is the Repair option before that)...
