Hello all,

I'm not quite sure what to do, as my expeirience with XP and Win2000 boxes blue screening is limited.

My mom recently blue screened her Windows XP computer. She said that it was a virus, but Norton turned up nothing afterwards. She wrote down everything that the screen said. I believe that the most important information follows:

Code:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xEDEB6058, 0xEC4F9970, 0x00000000)
*** SYMTDI.SYS - Address EDEB6058 base at EDEAC000, Datestamp 432EFFDF.
Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical dump complete.

symtdi.sys is found in two locations on my computer: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\I386, and C:\I386. They were both last modified before my parents bought the computer.

After restarting, the system is still running, but is said to be "considerably slower" by my mom. She also said that a box came up telling her that she needs the Office CD to run Office, although at the time she was on the Internet, not using any of the Office programs.

Any help that you guys and gals could offer would be greatly appreciated.

One BSOD may just be a glitch (hopefully).

Random "0x0000008E" Error Message on a Blue Screen in Windows XP

Start off by checking the overall health of the machine, these might help.

FAQ779-4784 may help.

windows XP running very slow

The file you specified in the BSOD message is the Symantec Redirector system file, sounds like the Symantec installation is corrupt or on its way out, either re-install or install a new version.

I have recently reinstalled 3 PC/Laptops for friends because Norton AV has expired on the machines and clogged everything up with its attempts to get the user to renew.

Even attempting to stop the applications running from with the config does not seem to work, it refuses to be uninstalled because liveupdate is trying to operate.

In the end its gets in such a tangle that so far my only option has been to rescue the users data and undertake a clean install removing NAV immediately thereafter (if its part of the manufacturers recovery process).

In believe this is wrong of NAV and that users should be able to say I don't want to renew and thats it!

If IT ain’t working Binnit and Reboot

Thanks for all your help, everything seems to be working fine.
