XP & Office 2000 Problem 1

(I know there are posts for questions similar to this. Been through them but can't see answer I am looking for).

I am trying to load a component (Microsoft Equation) from my Office 2000 CD but keep getting a message that says "This patch package could not be opened. Contact the applic'n vendor ...".

From Microsoft Knowledge Base articles Q295823 and Q238413, I have found that I might need to use the MS Installer Cleanup Utility but these are only for Win9X/NT and are not supported in XP or if you have better than v.2.0 of Windows Installer. It seems that XP might have the utility built in to Windows Installer but I can't find it or find any articles that explain it. So I can't uninstall Office 2000 (because I get the same error message)and I can't re-install it or any component.

All the articles seem to talk about fixing this specific Office 2000 problems with all Windows versions except XP. What do you do if you do have v.2(+) of Windows Installer (as XP does)?

Would appreciate any help or comments.

I am looking for a version of Windows Installer CleanUp Utility that will work for Windows XP also. Just wondering if you have been able to find one yet. If so, please let me know.

Same problem guys. Also looking for a solution to the same problem (MS installer is 2.0 and can not uninstall or reinstall MS Office XP). Found out problem can be solved on older versions of windows using older version ms installer can use cleanup utilities that remove office registry entries that are causing the problem. I may just end up editing the registry myself removing all office installer entries. Will let you guys know if it works.

you can use the "office XP resource kit" to forcibly remove all office programs/components - bypassing the installer altogether.

Just download the ORK (link at bottom) and install it. then go to the start menu, find the res kit section, and run the "removal wizard"

it scans your system, and tells you which office progs are installed. you can then move all programs to "programs to remove" section - and it will remove all files, reg entries, ODBC, etc.

just note that if you have installed any office updates from the MS office update site, you should go to control panel and add/remove and uninstall those FIRST, if possible, before running the removal wizard.

after running the removal wizard, I would suggest browsing to program files\microsoft office folder and deleting it (somewhat dangerous if other office-related programs are installed but not removed by removal wizard - use your best judgement - look in add/remove progs and see if anything appears to be office-related such as outlook plugins, etc).

you can then perform a clean office reinstall, assuming you have a valid cd and key. after the install, just go to office update and apply the latest patches.

TIP: if you run outlook, be sure to go to control panel, mail icon, and view the properties of your email profile. I would take a screen shot of it (alt-prtscr) and the properties of the items listed (such as exchange server name, POP account settings, etc) and save it in wordpad so you can be sure to reconfigure outlook during the reinstall as it was before. most often office installer can pick up the previous config and just use it though, but better safe than sorry.

Cheers for the links, still cant get it to shift, I click on the office product within the cleanup utility, it attempts to remove it but it still stays there, no errors or anything, a refresh / reboot didn't help...

Hi, thanks for that link to the download of that tool, Seemed to get rid of everything office related, but i still cannot run a new install I am still getting the same error. (It still has office 2k listed in add /remove) when I remove it it disapears but will be back upon a reboot. My problem with this first occured when upgrading win2k to win xp pro.

What else can I do/try?

I had this problem on a Me OS. runing Office 2000. After a day of trying everthing I tryed loading Office 2002 Pro, It said it would have to uninstall office 2000 first, I ansered Yes and Office 2002 uninstlled 2000 and installed 2002 Pro.
The trouble Office 2000 was haveing is when you tryed to open microsoft word or a word file the computer would lock up requireing a reboot.

The new MSI installer is not aggresively pushed through the Windows Update process.

It sorts a lot of issues.
