Can anyone recommend a tutorial / worked example of a setting a web page to act as / link to a database?

I've looked at the w3 schools pages and found this quite useful page but am really after a worked example.

The more I look at the W3 stuff, I'm viewing it again whilst typing this, the more I think it might answer the question. ( does and it doesn't. I'm really after a full example from start of style sheet to data entry in daily use if possible. (Something in between would also be a great help!)

Sun wrote something similar for their 'Forte' / Sun One software, a worked example from start to finish, with reasoning as to why you were doing, and how the code reacted with everything else.

I'm trying to develop a system without a database so that the system will be entirely free, and very, very easy for a non-techy to update and manage, hence XML and the desire for no database (or Java) if possible. I know MySQL is free, and VERY good, but is still requires some knowledge of SQL (and Java?) and is one more thing for an end user to learn. This project is part of my PhD - details at - hence the low cost. The project is aimed at SME's. I am developing a web based costing planning and scheduling system for bespoke manufacture (bespoke being the key part) and need to link it in to a Petrinet / Stochastic (I always spell that wrong!) modelling tool to perform the scheduling / optimisation, and would really like to not have to learn full XML to do this. In terms of my overall project this is kind of the groundwork, but I suppose it's all part of the experience / learning curve!

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
