XP pro sp2 NIS4 ... just noticed I cannot go to ... went to a similar system and the site works there ... did a virus, addaware and spybot scan ... found nothing ... disabled NIS Firewall (behind Router) no difference

Anyone have any ideas?

The screen loads the main graphic starts shifting to the left then the window freezes ... the only way to carry on is to close the window.

Did it work before SP2? Did it ever work on this setup? When did it start? If it worked before, what has changed? Need much more info.

I cannot say when this occurred (pre/post sp2) all I know is this only seems to occur on MS's home page ... I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 ... spent 2+ hours with Dell support last night updating all the Bios/Drivers plus running the Dell Diags overnight and the machine checks out yet this site page is still doing the same thing ... we also updated the Java from java.com ... removed all internet cookies and internet temp files ... reset the IE6 to default settings.

This machine has a wide screen monitor ... is it possible the MS page is at fault??? anyone else with a wide screen machine out there able to load

Microsoft on Wednesday made available a hotfix for a problem on Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems where Internet Explorer 6.0 crashes on certain types of Web pages.

The hotfix is only available through Microsoft Support Services. Microsoft only recommends the hotfix for systems that have experienced the problem.

According to Microsoft, certain Web pages that render vector graphics on the screen cause IE 6.0 to stop responding or crash and receive an access violation in Vgx.dll.

The Knowledge Base Article number is 885932."

According to support.microsoft.com site there is also a dll violation error ... not sure where this error will show ... I have examined the Event logs and find no reference to this dll ... there is no error message showing on the screen ... the hot fix is not available unless you want to call into Microsoft's sp2 hotline ... they claim the fix is temporary and that they are working on a permanent patch for windows update.

That is weird. I have the exact same problem on a Dell 8600. It must be something with the screen, I would guess. Is the DLL that is crashing the mshtml.dll? I ironically have been using Firefox to go to and that seems to work fine.

It strange that other people haven't been having issues like this ... IE6 must have a bug ... like you say FireFox works fine ... VERY FUNNY THAT MS's SITE is BREAKING THEIR OWN SOFTWARE ;)

The micker377 article does not apply for Microsft.com, nor for any issues with Windows Update sites (nor for any site I have ever had the need to visit, albeit I am not as adventuresome as many of you).

Your issue lie elsewhere.

. Start with IEFix: Enable the Sfc scanning option

. Next, add the sites as Trusted under IT, Tools, Internet Options, Trusted Sites (the third icon, green with with checkmark).

Still doesn't solve the problem (the issues listed do not match any of the problems listed below)

My hunch is this is some problem between the dell wide screen driver, IE6 and the microsoft.com home page code ... the main part of the page marches to the right until its bounds touch the right side of the Explorer window ... at that point the entire Window freezes ... the title bar states that IE is not responding ... the only way to get out is to exit the window either with the X, F4 or end task

Before I get completely confused, is this an issue with the Dell Inspiron 8600 and the wide screen display?

Call Dell. This is widely reported in the newsgroups as a problem. I am not ducking the issue, it just seems to me that the number of complaints warrant a serious talk with your Dell representative and support guys.

This is not per se an XP or IE issue.

I agree with all the posters above that it is a Dell issue with the 8600.
