I have just install Exch 2003 on a network running 2 x Windows 2003 servers in an AD. Both servers claim to be a DC in Active Directory Users & Computers.
Exchange services all start OK. When the 2 servers were first installed they were given an internal domain name only (ie abc.local)

Obviously on the Exchange server I wish to send and recieve mail using the external email domain (ie abc.co.uk)
I have added this domain into the Default Recipient Policy in Exch System Manager. I have also checked and the external address appears for the user under Active Directory. I have set the external address to be the Primary. Inbound emails and are delivered fine, however outgoing mails to an external address always arrive with the internal domain name in the From box (ie user@abc.local)

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

when you set up an exchange server you set up the domain......that will be your default domain for everything.......you add another domain to the recip. policy......you will be able to recieve e-mails all day long with the second domain, but you will only send out e-mail by what is defined as your primary address in the "E-mail address" tab in your AD profile. so if the primary address is set as the internal domain, everything they send outside of the organization will be sent out as that...

internally, you have all your users set up on exchange (im assuming) it doesnt matter what the domin is primary because it will be sent through the x.400 address.......

Thanks for the reply.

However I have set the Primary address in the Email address tab in the AD profile as the external domain, but the mail is still being sent with the address of the internal domain.

In the default SMTP virtual server properties you'll find a setting:

Delivery tab. Advanced.

"Fully-qualified domain name".

Change that to your outward facing domain name. Job done.

Thanks for the reply.
Tried that as well but still the same.

You are not perchance routing outbound email through a 3rd party gateway for spam/virus checking, are you? If you are, then check whether it is rewriting your headers for you ...

I do have a 3rd party gateway but have checked the mail log on this and confirmed the exchange server sent the mail with the local domain name.

I have just tried installing SP1 but still same.

Just to let anybody who is interested know.

After applying SP1 I reapplied Default Recipient Policy in Exch System Manager and it started working.
