I have an intranet-based Access database that will be accessed by users with different operating systems, making it a challenge to force users to join a workgroup.

Is the only option to send users a different batch file based on their OS and place the /wrkgrp...xxx.MDW on each user's command line for loading Access ?

...Or, is there some other way to link the mdw file to a specific Access database ?

Your help will be greatly appreciated !!! ;-)

The standard way is to set up a 'application shortcut file' which you tell your users is the ONLY way to get into the database.

Put the shortcut on their desktop.

The target line for a shortcut would look something like:
[tt]
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Msaccess.exe" "g:\dir\dir\db.mdb" /wrkgrp "g:\dir\dir\custom.mdw"[/tt]

(the above was adapted directly from one of the shortcuts on my desktop)

foolio12,

Thanks for your help - a STAR to you in appreciation. :)

However, what I had referred to by having users with "different" operating systems, is that each user's MSACCESS.EXE file could potentially be located in "different" locations.

Aside from different operating systems, it's also possible that a "local expert" has installed MS Office on a different drive. For example, here in my office, "D" drive is used.

Thanks for the example you gave. It's really the same as I already have. I expect I'll have to set up something on the intranet that will prompt users to specify where MSACCESS is installed, and then have them download a link that matches.

Any other ideas or suggestions are indeed welcome.

Thanks. ;-) ...Dale Watson dwatson@bsi.gov.mb.ca
