I have XP home.

From what I understand from the XP help file, I should be able to write to the CD by dragging and dropping the files directly from their location on C: to the CD drive (E:) in Windows Explorer. I've done this on other computers, but I can't do it on mine.

I write without any problems to the CD using Nero 5.5, but I can't do it directly, which I would sometimes like to do.

Does anyone know if Nero blocks the direct drag and drop capability, or am I missing something here?

Yes you should be able to drag 'n drop to a cd from win explorer, if no cd is incerted then the file would be cued. I have nero 6 ultra and that doesn't seem to conflict with drag n' drop.

The file is always queued in CD Burning with the native XP utility.

If I put a blank CD-R in the CD drive, and try to drag a file or folder in Windows Explorer into it, I get the message "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." I don't see any queue.

I can burn using Nero without any problems.

Is something wrong with my system?

If you are having problems copying to CDs and your CD recorder is recognized in My Computer, verify that the Enable CD recording on this drive check box is selected in the Properties dialog box for that drive.

The "IMAPI burn service" must be enabled [Under the system's Administrative Tools:Computer Management:Services and Applications:Services].

Linney, you hit it just right! Amazing what a little check mark can do. Thanks, and a star.

Linny, I read this thread and was hoping you could answer another related question. I have XP Home and I copied a 2000 Access database file (*.mdb) to my CD drive. It recorded the file (several times), but when I open the DB from the CD it opens with read-only permission.

So as a test, I then copied the *.mdb to my external drive, then opened the file and it did allow me to write to the database.

Can you explain why copying to the CD drive would be different and not allow write permissions, but copying to external drive would? My permissions within the Access database are set to all users, but that should have no affect anyway.

Is this a question for the Access forum?

HOW TO: Remove the Read-Only Attribute While You Copy Files from a CD-ROM in Windows 2000 (Q323002)

From a Command prompt use the ATTRIB command.
Displays or changes file attributes.
This command displays, sets, or removes the Read-Only, Archive, System, and Hidden attributes assigned to files or directories.

ArcSet -- Win9x, NT4, Win2K, WinME, XP
If you ever copied files from a CD-ROM to your hard drive, you've probably noticed that those files will be set to read-only, preventing you from modifying them. Removing the read-only attribute by hand can get really tedious, especially if you're looking at hundreds or thousands of files. ArcSet is a utility that does the job for you. It can automatically reset file attributes on specified files on a drive or in a folder, even recursing through subfolders.
