Does anyone know if there is a file that is the equivalent of wpa.dbl in Windows Vista? I have just installed a new and larger hard drive and cloned Vista to it. It is again asking me to activate. I have tried to do so twice and have had the unenviable task of trying without success to understand what the person in India is saying. Twice I have had to give up in the middle of the forty eight digit sequence as I simply cannot interpret what was being said.

It's unfortunate that you've had that much trouble "twice" on the phone with Microsoft. However, it's still your best option.

See if the person can email it to you next time you find yourself in the same situation. If that's not an option, have them sound out each letter using a name (such as "T for Tom"). I've called on many occasions, and although tough at times, you can get it with patience and asking for the right presentation.

Both calls were a two way street. Neither of the two women I talked to could understand me either. I would just like to know if Vista has a file containing the activation information as wpa.dbl does in Windows XP. If there is such a file, then the redundancy of multiple activations can be circumvented.

Ok, I'll accept that there isn't an equivalent to the wpa.dbl file in Vista. Since I wrote the initial question, I decided to go through the rigamarole of a third attempt in hopes of catching a person with a voice I could understand. The third time was a charm as the damn thing activated instantly on the Internet. It's a goofy affair, I should not have been asked to activate it again as it was merely a clone from a smaller hard drive, both drives had the same volume ID and identical hardware. Twice it declined to activate through the Internet connection and sent me to India, then on the third attempt I'm welcomed with open arms. Microsoft can be a profanity provocateur to which I occasionally succumb.
