Hi every one,
My PDC died couple of weeks ago; I had a BDC so I promoted it to PDC and create another BDC in a workstation box. Everything was working fine till yesterday.

Yesterday I had to reboot the new PDC. After reboot we cannot login to the PDC any more, because the workstation service wouldn't start, so many other services like logon etc. wouldn't start. When I try to start it manually, it gives me error, the workgroup/domain name already in use by other workstations..... . After trying two times it gives error ' the specified file could not be found..... . Event id 3932- (%is not a valid domain or workgroup name.

When I went to BDC (Newly build on dell Optiplex 270) its hard disk failed.

Now my entire network is down. Could you guys please help me to find out why the workstation service is not starting in the PDC? I’ve reinstall the service pack 6.

Hi got this from Eventid.net

Pedro Ignacio Morneo (Last update 1/18/2004):
In our case along with this error, there was another error given by the Service Control Manager witch stated: “The Workstation service terminated with the following error: The workgroup or domain name is already in use by another computer on the network”.
In turned out that there was a conflict between the BDC server that could not start the Workstation service, and the WINS server that we have configured in it. To resolve this I used the LMHOST file to resolve the PDC name for the domain and deleted the wins entry on the computer network properties.

Hope this helps

Hi itsp1965,
Thank you for your reply. I think I have the same problem. My old PDC ( the dead one) is still registered as PDC in the WINS and DNS. Because when I remove the WINS and DNS entry from the new PDC’s TCP/IP properties, it boots with out any error.

I don’t administer the WINS or DNS servers, but I can ask the admin group. Now do you know what should be done in the WINS and DNS server to remove the old PDC as my domain’s PDC? Only the deletion of old PDC’s would be okay? Thanks

Quick fix...

Reboot your PDC - but make sure it's unplugged from the network first.

Once it's backup and running, without the network connection, workstation service should (hopefully) start. Once it has you can plug in the network again and start netlogon, etc, manually.
