I am technology coordinator at a library system. I have a Windows 2000 Professional computer which is part of a Windows 2000 Server domain. All of a sudden this computer is missing the workstation service. I can ping it and work on it remotely through pcanywhere.

Event Viewer says it could not load rdbss device driver. The services under Local Area Network show installed. The service is listed but not started. It will not start, but gives a service specific error code 2250.

sc query reads: 2_file_system_driver; State: 1 stopped <not stoppable,not pausable,ignores_shutdown>; WIN32_Exit_CODE: 31<0x1f>; Service_Exit_Code: 0 <0x0>; Checkpoint: 0x0; Wait-Hint: 0x0

I see a similar problem in the Windows XP pro forum, but I need instructions (in simple words) that are point by point what this machine needs to have done. I am trying to fix this remotely if possible.

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks.

Hello techlady,

For some reason, cases are reported that wkssvc.dll is missing on the workstation leading to this. Check if it's there?

The workstation service is the Client for Microsoft networks.
Try uninstalling it:
1. Login as administrator or equivalent
2. Go to start -> settings -> network and dialup connections.
3. Right click Local area network connection, choose properties. Highlight "Client for Microsoft networks" and choose uninstall.
Have the system reboot if it wants to.
5. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3.
6. Have somebody on site put a Win2K CD in the drive of this machine, if you don't have the contents on its HDD or accessible via a network share.
7. Right click Local area network connection, choose properties. Choose Install -> Cick Client then Add -> Client for Microsoft Networks. Point it at the install files for Win2K if it needs to.
8. Have somebody remove the 2K CD from the drive, then reboot the PC and test.

Thanks ya'll, I got it started. For anyone who needs to know how to fix this error -- I tried to reinstall Client for Microsoft Network, but the option didn't show in the window. Client for Netware did show, however. In desperation I installed the drivers for Client for Netware and, it worked--even after reboot. Somehow, in the Netware installation, the correct drivers either installed or kicked back in for the Client for Microsoft Network. I then deleted/uninstalled the drivers for Netware, rebooted again, hoping that the drivers for Microsoft Network would still be there. They were.

I am having some really strange problems occuring on my computers. Wonder what's happening?

Thanks again.
