Workstation can't reopen Access after crash

Three copies of an Access 2003 frontend are using Access 2 data on a server and sharing this with an old Access 2 application.

If one of the 2003 frontends crashes then that user cannot reopen the application. The other two 2003 users and the Access 2 user can continue work but the crashed workstation cannot reopen Access until all users have closed and restarted Access.

Can anyone suggest what is causing this?
