When I rename a worksheet in an unprotected book, it autoinserts .xls in front of the new name and then returns a renaming error upon 'enter'

I've never seen that before. Could you give an example of a name this has happened to?

In this book, whether you double-click or right click rename, it inserts the .xls in front of whatever you renamed it and THEN when you try and remove the .xls, it does remove it but then the error "invalid character name" etc show until you escape to exit the rename. It also happens on a newly inserted worksheet. This file came from our head office and one of our new office girls couldn't get past this problem. I am using the file on my machine and still has the problem while new or other workbooks dont
TIA!!!

ps although there is a worry about Excel macro virus' I can email the file.

Fred,

Opened you worksheet, and was able to change worksheet names with no problems. Added worksheet and came up as sheet 1 and I changed it with no problems. You said that it does not do this on other workbooks, so I would copy and paste the bad workbook into a new workbook and see if that fixes things.

Hmmmph! I'm using Office XP on a W2k platform....your's any different?

HEY!!! I too just went back to it and tried it again and it worked fine. It must have had something to do with the renaming of the file. Do you want a copy of the original just to see?

Ooops...found the problem.

The original file was named on an old old machine in a different company branch with square brackets in the name. I never even noticed it but a colleague whom I was asking last week did when I show him the problem on my machine.

Thanks For all the help guys

Fred
