“Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource...The network path was not found.”

My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Workgroup. Then the dreaded BOINK!

We had two servers on our network, an NT Server SP6 and Win2K Server SP2. The NT Server was placed into service first. We using a workgroup and not a domain. The OS on the workstations is either Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro. Everything was fine until the HDD on the NT Server failed.

Restoring from the backup to the Win2K Server was fine. I re-mapped all the drives to the Win2K Server. No problem. Some of the new users were not created on the Win2K Server. I created the needed users and mapped the drives. We are able to access all the applications and data that was restored to the Win2K Server drives.

I cannot recall if I had to reboot any workstations prior to mapping the drives to the Win2K Server. Computer Browser Services were set to “Manual” and I reset the default to “Automatic” on the Win2K Server.

I can ping the server from several workstations and I can ping several workstations from the server.

Running the Net View command on the Win2K Server shows no lists and no error messages.

Any suggestions??

Okay, so you cannot browse properly. Is this on all the desktops, or just one?

Try installing DNS on the server, point all the workstations to the server for DNS. Remove any other DNS servers on the workstations. If they need web access, go to the DNS admin tool on the server, right click on the server and hit properties. There will be a forwarders tab, where you type in your isp's dns servers. This will give the desktops web access. Oh, and the server's dns setting should be its own ip.

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
