wordpad and mswrd832.cnv

I have a W98 user trying to open a .doc attachment from an email. Wordpad opens OK then gives me an IPF error listing mswrd832.exe.

I've done a bit of researching and figured out that the problem is one of converting. All of the 'patches' I've found apply to MS Word. We don't use MS Word, and don't plan on using it.

None of the searches I've done are turning up any solutions not involving Word.

Any ideas?

Reply back to the email and ask them to send it in another format? Or find a machine with word and open it there? Have them print it out and fax it to you? Forward the email to someone with word and have them convert it...

You can get a free Word .doc reader from Microsoft that will let users who do not have Word installed to open and view .doc extensions. It is at:

I've done one better. I downloaded the office suite form openoffice.org. It will open MS Office documents and it is free! I'm letting one of the users here try it out.

Does anybody here have any experience with the openoffice.org stuff?
