The following error message appears when Word2003 is loaded. User has full admin rights.
"Word can't display the template used in this document. Word cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer error 1605. This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

According to Article ID: 823522 in the MS KB, Word should not start after this message but it does, and AFAICS, then behaves as expected.

As suggested in the Article, I have navigated to the folder drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup to identify and remove any corrupt templates, but the folder was empty. Is that correct?

I've run Detect and Repair, the Windows Installer Clean Up utility and finally uninstalled and re-installed Office 2003 using install everything, but the error message still appears in Word2003 on loading. AFAICS, all the settings are the default installation settings for a standard free-standing internet connected PC.

Word (and Office) seem otherwise fine.

Any ideas on where to look for the corrupt, or should that be absent, template?

Did you try the resolution suggested in the MS KB article that you linked to above?

Look in \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup for the corrupt templates.

Cheers.

As I said: "As suggested in the Article, I have navigated to the folder drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup to identify and remove any corrupt templates, but the folder was empty."

There were no templates, corrupt or otherwise.

Issue resolved.

I removed all the templates from the folder drive\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Startup folder

I shall report that to MS so that Article ID: 823522 can be amended.
