word to access

I have a database which has a few mail merge links and I was just wondering if anybody could help me with the following problem:

Everytime I close down word it closes my database down as well. If I try to leave word open and try to run the query again to get new data in the mail merge document it doesn't let me.

Anybody have any ideas on how I can get round this?
