Word Stops Responding in XP

When I open Word or Excel in XP pro the programme opens ok, when I try to open a file the programme hangs and says stop responding. Eventually it wil open the file. I am running Norton anti virus 2006.

Any ideas please.

I have tried the moicrosoft updates and installed them ok, still no joy. The problem started when I installed a HP combined printer scanner fax with built in card reader?

Check for non-accessible drives or defunct shortcuts in the initial File, Open..., Look In: folder or in Tools, Options..., File Locations tab.

Thanks Freestone, it was looking for a card reader on my printer that's not connected.

There was a Windows Update a while back that caused this issue. I had a customers laptop doing exact same.

You might want to take a look at this, it resolved my issue.

It came down to removing update 908531 (MS06-015)
It's all about HP software and this update.
