Word locks up W98se 1

PC runs W98se and is up to date with MS updates etc..
Try to start Word (97) and it hangs the PC. This happens if word is started from desktop, office toolbar or start - programs menus.
Find a previous word document and click it. Word then starts up and displays that document OK, if a new document is required you we just go to FILE, NEW etc.. ALL OK.
Word 97 has been re-installed a number of times even removing it first. Windows still locks up if any attempt is made to run the word.exe from any location on the PC, even windows explorer.

Do you think this might be a virus? Like Ethan32? I saw similar problems at a place i used to work at because of a virus...

It's not a virus, Before it started an early release of Norton AV was installed, since then Norton AV 2002 has been installed.

Try uninstalling Office 97, then run regclean, reboot your computer, then reinstall.

The PC with the WORD lockup problem has not yet been looked at, the owner, a friend, has been away or too busy to let me on to try to fix his problem.
But, I have run REGCLEAN on my 3 PC's (1xW98 2XW2K) and they seem to be running quicker at boot up and in normal processes. Thanks again to Greatgazzoo for the recommendation to use this tool.

I finally got around to my mates to try to sort this problem of his.
As suggested;
1) Removed Office.
2) Rebooted.
2) Ran Reg Clean Pro
(wow over 130 invalid entries on his PC)
3) Rebooted.
4) Re-Installed Office.

Result - NO DIFFERENT - IT STILL HANGS AS ABOVE.
Did notice that when Office had been removed EXCEL & ACCESS were still on the PC and RAN OK.

Any Further help much appreciated.
