Hi.

I've been editing a document for a friend and there have been problems with the PC ever since I first got hold of it.

I'm suffering continual crashes of Word, and halfway through the document the view switches from Page Layout to Normal. I cannot change this back to Page Layout.

I've tried running the word "repair switch" (/a) but this had no effect. Norton reports no viruses detected in the document itself, or in winword.exe

I am officially lost.

Help!

Hi,

Have you tried taking out the default template (normal.dot) and letting word create a new copy? If you have autocorrect entries etc, just rename it to something like abnormal.dot and copy them over with the organiser afterwards if it works.

If you do a search for it don't be surprised if you find multiple copies.

Thanks for the suggestion, John, but it didn't work.

Still suffering problem.

faced a similar problem once. i removed the normal.dot and one more file which was there in the startup (i dont remember the name i think it started with W). after i restarted office everything was fine.

I've tried to do this, but cannot find the file beginning with W?

No luck with having removed normal.dot - made no difference.

Guess I'll haveta keep looking

Hi,

Does this happen with any other document?
If so try looking in the word startup directory for anything that may cause it problems.
You can find out where this is by going to tools -> options -> File locations and looking at the startup folder, then looking at it through Explorer.

John

It sounds like the document is corrupt. You can try a couple things:

1. Save the file as a lower version of Word and reopen.
2. Insert the file into a blank document.
3. Copy the entire file, except that last paragraph marker, and paste into a new document.

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions! Turned out to be just that document that was causing problems, so I actually saved it in plain text (as a .txt file), and then copied the text into a new document, before re-formatting.

Thankfully it worked!

Thanks again for all your help
David
