I have this trouble with word the reason for which I cant trace. It just happens occasionally and then vanguishes.
The problem is following: When I try to open word files while connected to the network word goes catatonic during "checking for macros" section - it stops responding. this happens REGARDLESS of whether the files are located on network or local drives. The only working solution found is to disconnect from the network after witch the file opens just fine (in case of files located on network drives I have to first copy the offending file to local disk).
<not_confirmed>When connection is restored afterwards and provided the offending file (which is now placed at local disk) is not closed it becomes possible to open files on network as well</not_confirmed>
