word hanging when opening in network share

windows 2000 PC using word2000 on a NT4 domain.

What happens is if you go to the share on the server where the docs are kept and try to open them through word, word hangs. You can however go through windows explorer and open the word doc and then save it using word in the share.
Word is 200sr1, win200 PC is SP2

any ideas

Try deleting Normal.dot on the PC and see if still does the same thing.
