using office 2000 small business. when i open word, i get a program error message that says: winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. you will need to restart the program. an error log is being created.
so, when i go to the dr. watson error log, lists a bunch of stuff, most of which i don't understand. i uninstalled office, and reinstalled it, but no luck. i renamed the normal.dot template, but when i opened word, it asks for the installation disk. the error log starts out as follows:

Application exception occurred:
App: (pid=744)
when: 9/3/2003@10:39:25.390
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

any suggestions?

Have you made a throughout check for virus, worms or trojans?
Any problems with other microsofts software (like Excell or Access)

no problems with excel or other office software. did have the blaster virus on that pc, but removed it.

scottdfs,
I found this helpful when I had c0000005 (access violation)

try this->
During startup, two of the events that occur are the loading of the Registry Data key and the Normal.dot global template. If either of these items is damaged, Word may fail to start. You can temporarily bypass these items by starting Word with the /a switch. To do this, follow these steps:

1) Click Start and then click Run.
2) Click Browse.
3) Locate the folder where the Winword.exe file is located.
NOTE: The default location is as follows:
4) C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
5) Click to select the Winword.exe file and then click Open.
6) Click into the Open box, and then press END to move the insertion point after the closing quotation marks surrounding the path and file name.
7) Type a space followed by /a, so that the command line looks like the following example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WinWord.exe" /a
note: space/a
8) Click OK.
If Word starts correctly, the problem is with a damaged registry Data key or a Normal.dot global template.

scottdfs,
Earlier post you said after you renamed the normal.dot template, and opened word, it asks for the installation disk...
Don't open word...
On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office 2000 in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.
In the Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.
It might prompt you for the CD at this time.
In the Reinstall or Repair dialog box, click Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish.
