New to this forum and did not see anything on this topic. Today a friend told me that his computer shows all the documents he opens at work in the history folder and in the history list that appears left when you click History in IE. He uses XP Pro and is on a small network. I noticed that on my computer with XP Home that My Computer shows up in the History list because my start page is a file containing links that is stored on my hard drive. When I open excel or word documents on my pc, they don't show up in History; apparently his does. Any solutions?

Documents and files will show up in your history but applications wont. Do you have 2 different versions of office?

One more thing you can do is go to your internet options and click settings for you to allow yourself to save all files. It might be turned off!

NoobX,

We both use Office 2000. I am sure of that. He uses Pro and I have Home. He opens a lot of excel files and complains that they go into the history. Why that bugs him I am not sure, but he wanted to know if there was a way to stop it form being able to do so. To clarify, it is the excel (and sometimes Word) files and not the applications themselves. I thought I remembered seeing once something that would prevent My Computer from showing up in History. (if that makes sense). So, you are saying it is normal for the files to show up there? If so, I will let him know.

P.S. sorry if I am cloudy on some of the details...I am getting the info from someone who is less technical ;)

If you dont want them to appear do what bcastner said! : )
You can always clear the history or set your settings to not save it!

NoobX,

What is the setting called that you are referring to in internet options?

Internet Options, General Tab, set "days to keep pages in History" to 0 (zero).

Every restart or new logon to the machine will clear all entries automaticly.

go to tools, internet options, days to keep history set it to 0. then go to settings above, and set amount of disk space to use 0.

Bcaster,

He has already set his History to 0 days. I thought you were referring to a setting in the Advance category of internet options...sorry. Thanks all for your help.

Do not go to settings above and set the cache size to 0. This is the Temporary Internet File cache, and not used by the History function.

lol I have mine set to 0 but i also run applications that need lots of ram!

Bill, then why do opened documents show up in my explore bar with temporary internet files set onm but when off doesnt show any type of files!

You are totally confusing me.

Virtual memory is a pagefile.sys issue. Temporary Internet Files have a quite seperate cache, which can roughly be limited in Internet Options. The History is actually recorded in the registry, and not in the pagefile.sys and not in the TIF cache.
