Here's something odd: I recently had to refresh the operating system (Win98 SE) on my desktop. It now appears that all of my Word 2000 documents are showing up as Wordpad files; clicking on them, opens Wordpad, not Word. Any idea how I can easily change them back?
tks,

Hi,

Have you tried clicking on anyone of the files with the right mouse button while holding shift then clicking open with. Then click the check box to which always associate this file type whith what you select. Then select word and click Ok.

If you havent tried it, it may help. If it doesnt help try downloading Tweak from microsoft - i think it has a mini program to reassociate file types.

HTH

Plank Thanks

Dan

Yes, Word is still on the system. I tried reassociating the files as Plank suggested and that seems to work, but the documents are still listed as Wordpad files in Win Explorer. Is there an easy way to just convert them all to Word docs? Will Tweak do that.
Thanks again,

Start-->Run and type:

regedit

and hit enter.

Go to hkey_classes_root
Find the .DOC extension, hit File-Export and save it to your desktop, then delete it in the registry.
Close the registry editor and launch Word.
That should do it. Anne Troy

Oh. By the way. When you install Windows, it installs Wordpad. That Wordpad install went into the registry and said *I'm in charge of all DOC files*, and Windows, passive PITA that it is, said...*Well...okay.*

Now, what Plank told you to do should have worked. But Windows might just be being a PITA again, so by doing this, you're just slapping it around a bit and showing it who's boss.

If it doesn't work, we'll beat it up proper with another registry edit. Anne Troy

No i think the only thing Tweak can do is re-assign the file association abit more in depth then you have.... hmmm still a problem

It might be an idea to head to the microsoft support database and see if anyone has had this problem before.

I have only ever once heard of a similar problem - but that was much worse. A friend of mine had managed to get Win XP to think that all his MP3`s were actually VBscript files. The curious thing is that they actually behaved like VBscript files - i couldnt pursaude anything to open theese mp3`s - i think he reformatted in the end.

Sorry for not being much help

regards

Dan

Sorry---spamming everyone.

I have to tell you though, that every time I've reinstalled Windows, I had to reinstall Office. Three versions, no less. Anne Troy

Thanks Dreamboat.

I knew there was a registry entry that you could change (read it in magazine) but i couldnt remember where it was.
