What could cause word docs to open slowly when accessing them from a Win2k server with WinXP while Win98SE opens the files at normal speed from the same Win2k server?

I would check the XP machines TCP/IP settings. Verify that DNS is correct for this server. This is just a guess...

Are there any other problems with the XP machine? (Can it log onto the network OK, are there any event viewer issues?)

-Hope this helps..

I am not sure yet. I have not touched XP yet. I am going to the clients site tomorrow and was trying to get a heads up on what I should look for.

Heres a couple things to think about..

It could be something stupid.. For example maybe the Windows98 machines have a good connection to the network (100mb) and the Windows XP machine is using dial up to connect to the Windows 2000 server. If this is the case, word docs would open a lot slower on the XP machine due to the connection. But lets put the obviouse a side for now...

-Check the event viewer of the XP machine and look for any stop errors.

-Check the performance of the XP machine. Maybe the CPU/mem or disk space is causing the problem.

- Check the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine. If the XP machine is in a Windows 2000 domain, it will heavily relie on DNS. If the DNS settings are wrong, you will have problems connecting to machines. Also check the protocols of the Windows XP machine. Compare this to some of the 98 machines. You may find that all the 98 machines are using NetBuiei, for example, and the XP machine does not have this protocol loaded. (Maybe the server is only using certain protocols...I would check the server TCP/IP and protocol settings.)

- I would check to see if there is a difference on how the 98 machines are logging onto the networks in comparison to the XP machine. Is there a domain or just a workgroup?

-I would also compare the logon that is being used. Maybe the XP machine is using a diffent type of logon?

(There should be no reason 98 machines would be faster then Windows XP machines...unless there is a problem.)

-just my thoughts...

Thanks,

I will post my findings tomorrow so others can prosper from my problem.

One other tip, in XP, open Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options. Uncheck the option to automatically browse for network folders and printers, boggs down communications a little.

I just finished with the client and it is kinda weird.

They only use the server for sharing files. Some of the PCs are on the domain and others are on a workgroup with a mapped network drive. The ones on the workgroup are not having any problems and the ones on the domain are lagging bad.

For a temporary fix I switched the PCs that were on the domain to a workgroup till I could research more about why the domain would be so slow. Is there a setting in Windows2k Server that would cause very slow access?
