Is there any way to create a style that won't change the Bold/Regular font attributes in a paragraph? I'm working with a document that has lines similar to:

Field Desc: Field Value

where I would like to apply paragraph formatting but don't want to affect the Bold/Regular font styles that currently exist. Actually I could get by with not changing any font attributes, but I can't figure out how to do this.

Let me see if I understand correctly. You have a paragraph with manually (?) set attributes. You want to take those attributes and create a new style from them?

At least this is what I understand by applying a style without changing the "font styles that currently exist".

Please confirm.

No, I want to "overlay" a paragraph style over an existing paragraph without changing any of the varying font attributes currently set within the existing paragraph.

On further investigation it appears that this can't be done. Applying a paragraph style is going to change all font attributes within the selected paragraph. It looks as though I'm going to have to create a separate character style to add the bold to my Field Desc: text.

Uh...well yes. Applying a paragraph style applies the attribute of THAT syle. How else could it be?

Yes, you could create acharacter style. If you are want to give attribute to characters (rather than a paragraph), then you should do that anyway. Character styles - for characters.

However, technically, your statement:
Applying a paragraph style is going to change all font attributes within the selected paragraph.
is incorrect.

Applying a paragraph style applies the attribute of THAT syle.

Say the current font size = 12. You apply a new style that has font size = 12. The font size does NOT change. To repeat, applying a font applies its attributes.

So it is very possible to pick information about a current paragraph (its attributes) and create a new style based on those attributes...and then change one.

A much easier way is to use bookmarks. Then apply character style to them.

There are more ways to deal with what you apparently want. However, it is not clear if these are fields themselves, or not. That would help.
