Hi,

I have a user who when she tries to update the contents of her Normal.dot template gets the error message

"Word cannot complete the save due to a file permissions error"

The template is stored on a network drive H:\Templates\Normal.dot and is 1.63MB. I have given the user full permissions to the file and the folder and she still gets the same error message. Any suggestions appreciated as I'm all out of ideas.

Thanks,

Gareth

Hi Gareth

Copy the normal. dot to C and let her make the alterations and you overwrite the one on H with it
You have a correct network security set up do not alter it for one user.

cos Iwould like to bet she needs to be an administrator on the operating system to alter the companies GLOBAL normal.dot for her own use and do you really want to do that??

additionally if anyone else is using it she'll get another error normal.dot template is in use please save to another name
in this instance you may need to consider having her particular template stored locally with a shortcut on her desktop or if you need a macro to attach the template and then put this on menu bar let me know thats easy peasy.

hope you followed that

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the info. I've given that a try with the user, but it would appear that we have a group policy or something similar set up that stops us changing where the templates path in Word points to, it will not change from H:\Templates. The file is her own personal one, the H:\templates folder is user specific (Sorry, didn't make that clear before!) so it's only her that this is affecting and she should be able to make any changes to it she likes as she has full permissions to it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Gareth

Yep

but I'm not sure you'll want to try it
one way depends on:
how good is your word vba and are you comfortable with toolbars etc

the second is really silly but if you put a shortcut on her desktop pointing directlty to the template file because it is a template it will generate a new document if you activate it ( see document 1 title on the right of the title bar)

I suggest the second first and if that is not acceptaable come back to me an I will walk you thru creating a button to remove styles and attach to a template on a different path - but this ammendment to a global company template must be approved before implementation.
