Ok, have a user w/ this Word doc. He clicks "View > Header & Footer" and the normal "Header and Footer" toolbar pops up as it should. Then he clicks on "Insert AutoText" and the menu doesn't come up! Just like a deformed part of it shows but none of the menu options like "PAGE, Author, Page#..." I open the same document in my version of Word (same Office 2003 version) and it's fine!

Any clues?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the user has broken his normal.dot or removed the autotext anyway. Find it (in his user profile) and rename it as normal.bad.

Thanks, tf1. I had him search for all "normal.dot" on C:\. Found 3. Renamed them all to "normal.bad" (all in different directories). No changes. Had him reboot. Same thing. I searched again for "normal.dot". There were none. Isn't Word supposed to recreate them?

If you are using Office 2003, Word doesn't create a normal.dot until you make a change that forces the need for it such as changing the default page setup or default font, etc.

There's another possible problem if you still cannot make a save to force a normal.dot: it is the Full Adobe Acrobat v7. This is programmed by morons (Adobe) to inhibit all changes to normal.dot. See .

Try starting Word in Safe Mode and see if the Autotext is OK: from Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Test again.

Thanks, man. Sounds reasonable. Had to leave a message for the user. We'll see.
