Word and Excel cannot open multiple files at once

When I select two or more Word (2002) documents in Explorer, right-click them, and select 'Open' or 'Print', Word does not launch. When I select just one document, it works as expected.
The same applies to Excel 2002.

Am I missing something here?

I thought it would be a good idea to look in the registry, under HKCR\Word.Document.8\shell\open\command, but no joy, it's encoded.
