Word 97 - "An Unexpected Error Occured: I/O Error 6" 1

Cannot access my files through Word - file and folder names are now ?????'s - when I attempt to open a file I get the following message:

An unexpected error occured: I/O Error 6


Any ideas what may have caused this and how to fix it.
