I have a Word 97 template, with headers and footers, accessed by several users on an NT network. Some users find that when typing the last line on some of the pages the text flickers until the page breaks and text continues on next page. This is intermittant and some users have no problem. All their PCs have the same spec. Any ideas?

could it be a print driver thing...are all machines using the same type of printer?

I think this is to do with 'widow & orphan' control. An orphan is where a paragraph will have only one line appearing on the next page, and a widow is where the first line of a paragraph is the last line on a page, with the rest of the para on the next page.

The widow & orphan controls force Word to keep 2 lines together, so if there's going to be an orphan it will bump the penultimate line of the para onto the next page (to keep the orphan company I guess).

The flickering occurs when Word is trying to decide whether it needs to push a line across to the next page.

Ways round this:
1) Turn off w & o control (Format - Paragraph)
2) Work in Normal or Outline view
3) Don't worry about it and keep working
