Hello there everyone, first time user here. I normally hang around the Crystal Reports area. Interesting problem has crept up to my office:

We are currently migrating from NT 4.0 to XP in the office. We intend to keep Office 97 for most everyone as Office XP is just not feasible.

OK some .DOT's fail to open in XP using Office 97 or Office 2000. XP systems with Office XP can open the template just fine. The existing NT systems using Office 97 can also open the templates fine.

The templates were created in 97 on NT.

Not all the .DOT's fail to open in XP, however the ones that do fail, fail everytime.

Moving the template local to the user had no effect of failure or not.

Can anyone help me? Is this a known issue? I searched the FAQ and keywords and was unable to locate help.

Thank You

The template fails to open and this error message is given.

------------

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.

-------------

Please note that this happens only with the combination of XP and Office 97 or Office 2000 and only on some templates. On Office XP and Windows XP the documents open fine and on Win NT and Office 97 they open fine.

Thanks for your response, any ideas?

Copied from another thread of the SAME question:
01. Open Windows Explorer
02. On the menu, click on 'Tools', 'Folder Options'
03. Click on 'File Types'
04. Press 'W'
05. Scroll down to 'WINWORD'
06. Click on 'Edit'
07. Double-Click on 'Open'
08. In the box labeled "Action used to perform action" make sure there is a '"%1"' (or percent sign 1) after the path and file name. Note the double quotes surrounding the '%1' SAMPLE: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" "%1" When I checked, I noticed that the '%1 was missing.
09. Click on 'OK'
10. Click on 'Close'
11. Click on 'Close'

Thanks for the help. To clarify you cannot '05. Scroll down to 'WINWORD' as that is an actual application not an extension. I did, however, insert the %1 in the appropriate area under the .DOT and .DOC extension area.

Still getting the same error.

I've searched for the mentioned previous thread and am unable to locate it. Could you perhaps post a link to it?

Just an interjeciton...The Norton Antivirus Office add-in has been known to cause some funkiness. If you're running Norton 2002/2003, disable this add-in and see if relief follows.

u may need to re-register word

go to Start, Run and type (inluding quotation marks)
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\winword.exe" /regeserver

pls check to make sure the path is same or make changes to suite ur path

...trouble spelling "interjection"...
should have said "Plug-In," not add-in...
...if this fits, to disable, do thusly:
In Norton click Options
In the section titled Other click Miscellaneous
In the center you'll find Enable Office Plug-in
Remove the tick to disable it...

Thanks for the help everyone. Here is what worked.

Copy the file and rename it. Opens just fine after that.

really, really odd.
