Hello

I would like to create a table of contents so that it is displayed as:

1. Heading 1
1.1 Subheading 1
1.2 Subheading 2

2. Heading 2
2.1 Subheading 1

3. Heading 3
2.1 Subheading 1

instead of:

1. Heading 1
1.1 Subheading 1
1.2 Subheading 2
2. Heading 2
2.1 Subheading 1
3. Heading 3
2.1 Subheading 1

When I create a table of contents, I do not use styles, and select 'Table of entry fields' in the options.

I can manually insert the carriage returns after the TOC has been generated, but if I choose to update the entire table, it removes the carriage returns.

Does any know how I can get word to insert a carriage return between a TOC level 2 (or higher) and a Level 1 TOC please?

Thank you

Hi,

Change the STYLE Paragraph format of your HEADING level 1 to have an appropriate number of POINTS BEFORE.

@SkipVought: Many thanks indeed for help. I had spent about an hour trying to figure this out yesterday.

@fumei: Enlighten me, I am mystified.

Mark,

Gerry is a real wiz at MS Word. I'm more of a novice. I think that he was endorsing my suggestion; hence the BINGO.

However, his paintings and sculpture can be mystifying, however beautiful.

Thank you. I thought it might be some new Internet-speak which I was unaware of [morning] *chuckle*

Mystifying?????? Well, I have never heard them described as such...but I will take that in a positive light.

Mark - yes I was endorsing Skip's post. You can put space between TOC items by modifying the style used for the TOC generation. I would also like to add that you do NOT have to do this by modifying Heading 1. This is based on the assumption (and odds are that it is true) that you are using the built-in heading levels and styles.

You do not have to use the built-in heading levels and styles. You can make the ToC generate using any style you like. In other words, you can design and use your own styles for your headings, and then instruct Word to use those for the TOC. The key here is that Word will use whatever style you want for the generation of the TOC, but will use the TOC x style itself for the format of the TOC.

So changing the format of the Heading 1 style will not change the format of the TOC - changing the format of the TOC x style will.

Oh, which means that there will not be a carriage return between TOC items - which is not something you can do as you discovered. It means the points after (or before) have been modified for the style.
