When I open Word 2003, I get the following message:
"Word cannot open this document template
c:\document and settings\...\TbRun9.dot" and, I cannot open any existing My Documents doc, rtf documents in Word--I keep getting "document not available"essage. I am a theatre critic and I run website and i desperately need to access Word and my document files.
Also, when I exit Word byrt clicking on the "X" in the upper rt corner, I get this message: "The file Normal.dot exists. Do you want to rerplace the existing file?" I click "no" and the message comes back and I also click "no" then it exits Word. This is strange--any solutions?

It sounds as if Word is trying to launch TbRun9.dot at startup. Your best bet is to do a search in C:\documents and settings\ for that file. It will probably be in an Office\Startup folder. When you find it, move it somewhere else (don't delete it in case it turns out that you need the file) & then try to open Word again.

Also check to see if the file TbRun9.Dot is set to load as a global template. Tools > Templates and Addin. See if it listed there. if it is uncheck it for the time being.

Would be possible to post the full path mentioned in the error message?

I am wondering if it may have something to with with Outlook. Could this file have been opened at some time from an attachment?

I found and moved the TbRun9.dot file (which is a Text Bridge Pro 9.0 template)--moving it did no good.
Word will not open any documents--and my old documents are in My Document but I can't open them--I ran debug and repair, upgraded to office 2003 but same story. I keep getting "document not available" when I try to open an existing documents. since I'm a writer/editor, this is a major problem. Any ideas? I don't have my CD from wondows 2000 pro so I can't run a repair.

forgot--I sometimes get a "a dialog box is open" message when I click on some old documents

Is there anyonw who knows how to repair Word--and--My Documents so I can open the many files I have there?

Try this from a commandline. Hopefully your PATH environment includes the path to winword.exe. If not, find it, and get a commandline prompt there.

Type: winword.exe /r
This starts Word in the background, makes changes in the Windows registry, and then quits. This switch forces a re-register of Word in the Windows registry.

Next, please clarify about trying open files. Are you opening them from the File > Open dialog in Word? Are trying to open them from Explorer? Is there any difference?

Hi,

I get the same error, and I also get the message about the "normal" template.

If I create a document and save it, exit Word and try to load the document again it says "file xxx is not available". The same goes for any Word document whether created by me or from elsewhere so now I can't open any document.

I searched for TbRun9.dot and couldn't find it. Is it a hidden file? I tried the other fix winword.exe /r and that didn't work either.

TIA
Ben

I tried "winword.exe/r" but it came back--file not found--check the file path. Any more ideas?

tom9698: if you got “file not found – check file path”, then there are only two possibilities.

1. You do not have Word on your computer.
2. You did not type the command with the command prompt in the folder that has winword.exe – “check the path”. Do a Search for winword.exe. Find out what folder it is in, then navigate your command prompt to that folder. Try again.

redspan: unless you are also using Text Bridge Pro 9.0, it is unlikely that TbRun9.dot is relevant for you.

OK. Toast every normal.dot file you can find. Do a search. Get rid of them all. To be on the careful side – rename them all, and MOVE them to another folder (make one named OldNormals). Just make sure there is none available for Word.

Check all the start up folders, and remove all startup files. If you want, MOVE them to another folder (hey, dump ‘em into OldNormals).

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

Find the winword.exe folder, and run it with /r again.

Open Word. Check Tools > Templates and Addins to see if anything is loading. There should not be. Check Tools > COM Addins. This will not likely be visible as it is not a default menu item.

To add it: Tools > Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
In the Categories box, click Tools.
Drag COM Add-Ins from the Commands box over the Tools menu. When the Tools menu displays the menu commands, point to the location where you want the COM Add-Ins command to appear on the menu, and then release the mouse button.
Click Close.

There should be no COM Addins.

Write something, and save the file. Close Word. Open Word. Does the file show on the Recent Files list? If it does, what happens when you select it, to load it?
