Word 2003 active table of contents 1

I currently have a document with a table of contents that we've been printing as a reference manual for our employees.

We would like to make it interactive so that the employees can open it (read only) on our network & click on items in the table of contents & jump directly to those items (like Acrobat does).

Is there a way to display a bookmark list along the left side of the screen & keep the document open on the right?

That functionality is built into the TOC.

Hover over a TOC entry, and see what message appears.

Now, do you know of a way to keep the TOC open on the screen (probably at the side) while looking through the document on the other side? I know in Excel you can freeze the panes, but what can you do in Word?

You could turn on the web toolbar. There is a back button that will take you back to where you came from.

Or

You can add GoToTOC button. ----> Tools, Customize, Commands, "All Commands"

Take a look at what happens if you turn on the document map.

View | Document Map

Document Map works well if headings are styled properly... but it sure doesn't if they are not.

Plus the Document Map does not always have a direct relation to the ToC. It can, but it also can not.

Under Tools | Options | Security, I set a password so that the document can only be edited if you know the password.

Then, in vba, I wrote a sub that depending on whether the document was opened as read only or not, it would change which toolbars were displayed. I created a macro to go to page 1 & put it on a custom toolbar that would open if it's read only & disable the other toolbars & menus.

Hopefully, this will protect my document enough. Plus give the ability to use the TOC to jump to different sections.
