Word 2002 open document preview problem

We have started having a problem with Word 2002. After starting Word (running on their local C drives) and clicking on the Open folder, Word hangs for two to five minutes if preview is selected from the Views drop-down option. This only happens if the document is on a network server. This only started after we upgraded the servers to Windows 2000. We have two work arounds:
1st. copy the file to the local C drive before opening
Word, then preview can remain enabled.
2nd. set Views to details from the drop-down options.

Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?
