Hello

I've just been reading an old thread on this (thread68-1444895). I think I have the same problem.

In the old thread, tf1 suggested "This is a weird problem and suggests a possible corruption somewhere. My suspicion is a corrupt printer driver. Try this for diagnostic purpose please. From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. This will start Word in Safe MOde. Open one of the documents and test now to see if you can edit it without getting the error messages."

I have done this and in Safe mode the problem disappears - so I wonder if you could advise me on what I should do now?

Cheers.

Perhaps reinstall Word? Repair Word?

And also check if your document has many words marked in another language than the language for which your spelling dictionary is set up?

Good luck,

Word does sometimes throw this error message when a document apparently has many spelling errors. It is usually because text is marked as being in the wrong language and Word thinks every word is misspelled.

I have just skimmed the other thread and I can see that getting prompted with every keystroke would be a problem. Is that what you are getting? I don't think Word normally does that by itself, when it gets the error once, I think it just gives up trying.

If it is corruption, and corruption is often cited where a problem can not be properly diagnosed, then you need to isolate where it is. If the problem goes away in Safe mode then it is likely caused by a problem in something that is turned off in safe mode, and you need to test these things one at a time. The first thing to check is any AddIns (see under Tools > Templates and AddIns).

Does the problem occur for all documents, or just particular ones?

Enjoy,
Tony

Hmmm, thanks for the advice.

It's just one (large) document that is giving me the problem, although it's much smaller now than it has been in the past several months, and it's only just decided to do this. Very strange. (Edited down from 95,000 words to c. 82,000). There are a handful of French and German words in there, but I doubt they're enough to make a difference.

After I get the message, if I then try 'tools>grammar..etc' the file becomes impossible to use as the message appears at each key stroke.

If "Check spelling as you type" is switched off and it still happens then something is definitely amiss. As it doesn't happen in safe mode, the assumption must be that there is a setting (user-controllable or not) either in the document, its template, or less likely in my view, somewhere else. Assuming the document is based on Normal.dot, try renaming Normal.dot (and letting Word create a new one) and see if it still happens.

Enjoy,
Tony

I know it's a lot of text, but can you copy it all to a brand new document and then see if the problem still exists? Actually, don't copy it all- omit the very last paragraph marker at the end of the document.

I'm not sure what limits there are on how much can be copied at once; however, if that's an issue, it might actually be advantageous to copy chunks and test the ever-lengthening document to see at what point the problem recurs.

Good luck!
