Won't Shut down then won't start up

3 year old Compaq Presario.

Shut down normally turns itself off. Sometimes hangs at the "Please wait while Microsoft shuts ....." until the power saver suspends the machine. Firing it back up sees it hang at the initial screen. Never starts the hard disk.

Turning it off and on again (at the main switch on the back) starts it.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Download the win98 Shutdown fix from microsoft. This will cure it.

Thanks. Tried that but I'm running Windows 95 and it spits the dummy if I try to run the 98 patch.

I've searched around for a 95 shutdown fix but can't find anything.

Still stuck.

Hate to say it, but there is no shutdown patch for Win95. There are a few documents to troubleshoot shutdown problems in 95 in technet, but they are a real pain. It boils down to having you disable startup items, drivers, and prgrams until you isolate what program/driver is hanging on shutdown. They have detailed instructions on how to do this and they look like they could take several hours to go through. I've had some limited luckusing Windows Update with this problem, it might be worth a shot. Good luck.
